NCARB

Illustration – Merch Design – Research – project COORDINATION

Project Brief

An experimental merchandise design and vender research. The National Council of Architecture Registration Boards (NCARB) is a nonprofit organization that is comprised of and collaborates with the architectural licensing boards across the United States. They develop recourses and programs to help regulate and create more direct routs for architects to become licensed.

NCARB has a booth at the 2022 AIA National Convention and want to offer a gift for those attendees who show their NCARB membership badge. This year they wanted to give away a T-shirt that relates with their theme “Destination Architect”. With a tight deadline of one week and a budget of $4,000, they needed a custom design made and a quantity of 500-700 shirts to be printed and delivered in time for the event.

Design Objective

To stay true to the theme “Destination Architect” and the design and illustration style of their existing website for the event, I wanted to lean into the idea of a map. Inspired by the blocks created by roads on a map, I illustrated elements from their existing website and videos and placed them inside of those blocks. The lines represent the roads that one would travel to arrive at each destination, and each destination is something that you will encounter on your path to becoming a licensed architect. This design represents the theoretical map that NCARB provides to help navigate the process to become an architect. The front of the shirt will show the illustration, while the back of the shirt displays NCARB’s tagline “Let’s go further” with a map pin illustration that is repeated throughout the website.

Research: Vendor Quotes

After researching multiple custom t-shirt printing sources for the best quote, it became clear that the options would be limited as a result of the tight deadline requiring expedited shipping. There were few online custom shirt retailers that could fill the quantity necessary, but in order to stay within budget the back design had to be sacrificed. I kept these options in as they still fit in the requirement, but I was determined to find an option that did not require to sacrifice parts of my design.

Since shipping seemed to be the hurdle, I reached out to local printing shops within NCARB’s area in D.C. to see if they could fill the order in time and had much more success. The local shop not only could fill the full order of 700 shirts, front and back designs, and deliver the order in plenty of time, but they were significantly under budget. I was very happy to find this option and to be able to support a local small business as well.

Optional Addition: Utilize Remaining Budget

Since the local print shop was able to fill the order while staying under budget, I thought that the remaining budget could go towards another gift for the attendees. I found an online retailer that could full an order of 700 vinyl stickers of the design, expedite delivery, and be within the remaining budget. So not only will the attendees will have a shirt, they will have a sticker that they could proudly display on their computer, water bottle, etc.. An optional addition to the gift that shows NCARB’s appreciation to the attendees that stop by their booth.
